May the 4th Be With You

It’s May 4th, 2016, otherwise known as Star Wars Day! It’s also a Wednesday, which means it’s hump day, so if you’ve reached the point of the week where you haven’t worked out yet, don’t feel like getting another workout in (*cough*cough*raises hand*), or have maybe dropped the ball in eating well, know that it’s not too late to change that!

After all, Wednesday is the mid-point. It’s where we push ourselves to continue with eating well and working out, AND it’s where we change how the week has been by getting back on track. So whether you need that extra nudge of the Force to keep going or to re-set the week, there’s no better day for that than Wednesday, especially when it falls on Star Wars Day.

If you need a little extrinsic motivation to use that Force, here’s Daisy Ridley using it to train. Notice that her trainer gives her pointers to correct her movements and her comment that she has to be distracted to get through her workouts. It’s not perfect, it’s not easy, but she gets through it!

So whether your light saber would be red or blue, may the Force be with you.

runDisney: Virtual Running Shorts Events

Running events can be expensive, especially when you consider one that involves the cost of the event itself, travel, lodging, food, and then being at the Disneyland or Walt Disney World Resorts for a day or two. I’ve previously talked about runDisney events as well as my goal to participate in one this year. Fortunately for all of us on a budget or looking to participate in a runDisney event without taking time off of work or traveling, runDisney’s first ever Virtual Running Shorts Series allows Disney fans to participate in a runDisney event at a low cost ($142 for all three 5ks or $39 each) and with the convenience of participating from wherever we are in the world.

“Bikini Ready” via The Beauty

It’s that time of year. Target has stocked their swimsuits and summer grilling dining sets. Magazines by the grocery checkout stands have articles telling us that we’ll find out what we should eat, how we should workout, what new product Dr.Oz recommends for weight loss, etc. inside their covers. We all have to be ready for bikini season, tank top season, swim trunk season, those wedding photos, for that cruise, or that spandex cosplay.

In Image Comics’ The Beauty, it’s been two years since a venereal disease has been moving rapidly amongst the global population with over half of the US  infected. This disease “makes those infected better looking… a disease people want.”(imagecomics.com), which has earned it the name “The Beauty.” The one known side effect? A chronic yet slight fever.

We recently read Volume 1 of this book in my local comic shop’s all female book club (aptly called “Girls with Issues”). Our meeting included discussing the book itself (art, writing, questions about the disease, etc.) as well as discussions about the role media plays in dictating beauty standards, how beauty standards change, and the pressure we all feel to live up to these standards.

Motivation Monday: #BeAHero with Her Universe

Have you ever had one of those moments where it seems as though the universe is talking to you? You know, maybe you have an idea or a conversation and the next time you pick up your phone, turn on the tv, open a magazine, or walk outside, you see something that reminds you of that idea or conversation. You just cannot get away from it.

Well, as I mention in the About section of this site, I started thinking about the idea for Fandom Fitness when I was in my first semester of my Fitness, Nutrition, & Health certificate program (Spring 2014). Now that the site is in its fledgling stage (the Maz Kanata egg muffin recipe marks the 20th post on the site!), I’m seeing other outlets like blogs, YouTube channels, Instagram accounts, and retailers also focus on pairing fitness with nerdy/geeky passions. One brand in particular that is using fandoms to make fitness accessible and fun is Her Universe.

Her Universe is one of my favorite brands for geek fashion, which I’m sure is obvious  if you’ve read any of the posts about activewear, but it’s also one of my favorite brands for the positivity that it brings to the greater geek and nerd community. Not only is it one of (if not THE) first brands to make fashion specifically for female fans of Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, The Walking Dead, Doctor Who, and Marvel, but it celebrates being a member of a fandom as well…. whatever that may be. Her Universe specifically celebrates female fandomonium with its “Fangirl of the Day” posts, size range (kids’, juniors’, plus size), and Ashley Eckstein’s positive and inclusive demeanor.

Maz Kanata’s Egg Muffin Recipe

If you follow Fandom Fitness on Instagram, then you’ll know that I’ve been talking about making a recipe inspired by the snack that Rey is seen eating at Maz’s tavern in Star Wars The Force Awakens. After a few times of “pause” “rewind” “pause again” with the movie, I figured out that Rey is actually seen eating two separate things. The first shot has her eating half of a kiwano melon (otherwise known as the horned melon, African horned cucumber, and blowfish fruit) and the second, which is seen in the image below, looks like an apple with romanesco and blackberries (I assume that the apple is hollowed out to hold the fruit).
